Fall Tree Care Tips for Homeowners

Water before the ground freezes. Trees go into winter with the water already in the soil. In a dry fall, give a deep soak every couple of weeks, especially for evergreens and anything planted in the last two years.
Schedule pruning for the dormant season. Late fall through winter is the best time to prune most trees. The leaves are off, the structure is easy to see, and most insects and diseases aren’t active. Oaks especially: pruning them in the growing season leaves fresh wounds that attract the beetles that spread oak wilt.
- Check for potential hazards before winter storms. Ice and snow put heavy loads on weak limbs and branch unions. Have one of our ISA Certified Arborists look at any tree that hangs over your house, driveway or power lines.
