Tree and Shrub Fertilization

Arbor Masters Fertilization Services

Fertilization is often something homeowners neglect with their trees and shrubs, but it can have important benefits. At Arbor Masters, we offer several different fertilization methods to care for your trees and give them the boost and nutrients they need.

Deep Root Fertilization

We inject liquid fertilizer directly into the soil to get the nutrients directly to the roots. This reduces the risk of runoff and ensures your trees’ roots get the nutrients they need.

Soil Building

By adding organic material to the soil, we can significantly improve its structure and provide long-term benefits for the overall health and vitality of your trees and shrubs.

Foliar Sprays

Foliar sprays deliver fertilizer and nutrients to the leaves. This process allows the tree to absorb these nutrients and get a health boost while also improving soil structure.

Soil Tests

Fertilization should focus on providing missing nutrients rather than general applications. We conduct soil tests so we know what and how much to apply.

The Importance of Fertilization for Your Trees

It’s Not Something to Ignore

Trees are not naturally meant to grow in yards or urban environments. They are used to growing in forests where fallen branches and leaves decompose onto the forest floor and revitalize the soil with nutrients. Your trees won’t have the same luxury in a yard, making regular fertilization all the more critical.

Fertilization is best left to experts who can determine how much and what to fertilize with. Too much fertilizer or a mistimed application will do more harm than good. An ISA Certified Arborist is a tree expert who can deliver the needed nutrients and suggest other beneficial work for your trees, like pruning or insect and disease control.

Our Fertilization Process

What to Expect When It’s Time for Fertilization

We know many people aren’t familiar with the fertilization process. We’ll walk you through it, so you know what to expect. We’ve fine-tuned our fertilization process over the years to provide the best service possible to your trees.

When you work with us, here’s what to expect:

An arbormasters arborist drilling a hole through a tree for trunk injections.
  • 1

    Initial Assessment

We’ll conduct a survey of your property and help you determine if your trees are deficient in nutrients and showing signs of stress. Then, we’ll provide a quote of the scope of the job and present it to you.

  • 2

    Soil Test

Once you accept the proposal, we’ll get to work determining the best path forward. Our arborists will conduct a soil test to determine what nutrients are missing from the soil and the best way to deliver them.

  • 3

    Preparations

We create a specialized fertilizer cocktail for each of our customers based on what their trees need. We’ll create a fertilizer that has the right balance of nutrients and that avoids damaging the roots.

  • 4

    Fertilizer Application

Depending on the location of your tree and the best method for the species, we will use a deep-root fertilization method to deliver the nutrients to the roots or a foliar spray to get the fertilizer to the leaves.

  • 5

    Fertilizing Timeline

Fertilization is often not just a one-and-done deal.  Trees will use up these supplemental nutrients over time and will eventually get stressed again. We will set up a timeline for additional fertilization and soil building.

Fertilization for Resistance

Trees and shrubs need extra nutrients from fertilization, as the soil is often depleted of nutrients when they are planted. Our Certified Arborists base fertilizing programs on the type and overall health of plants and trees, the time of year, the existing nutrient ratio, and soil composition.

Like Vitamins, For Trees

In many ways, performing tree and plant fertilization is similar to people taking vitamins. As a part of our regular tree fertilization service, we supplement nutrients that help them break down essential elements quicker, thus heal and grow faster while becoming healthy and vibrant.

Better Foliage, Better Help

In the urban landscape, deciduous shade and ornamental trees gain many benefits from annual fertilization programs. Some of the more valuable benefits of plant and tree fertilization are rapid growth, faster recovery from injury, better foliage, and overall improved health.

Benefits of Fertilization Services for Trees

Fertilization has numerous benefits for trees, including:

Increased Tree Growth

Fertilization provides trees with the nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy. This will lead to bigger and more aesthetically pleasing trees.

Improved Tree Health

Preventing diseases and insects from harming your trees is crucial, and fertilization aids in this. This is because healthy trees are better able to resist pests and diseases.

Improved Soil Quality

Fertilization can aid in improving the overall quality of the soil, making it more fertile and easier for trees to grow in.

Reduced Erosion

Our methods reduce erosion by improving the structure of the soil. Healthy soil is better able to hold water and nutrients.

Enhanced Nutrient Cycling

Fertilization can assist in enhancing the nutrient cycling in the soil. The process provides trees with the nutrients they need to grow, which then return those nutrients to the soil when the trees die.

Signs Your Tree Needs Fertilization

Trees have several warning signs that may indicate something is wrong. The signs that a tree needs fertilization often look like the signs of a tree dealing with other stress, so a soil test is the best way to know if your tree is lacking in nutrients. However, if you see any of these signs, it may be time to call an arborist for an assessment:

Small leaves

Lack of growth

Dying branches

Discolored leaves

Premature leaf drop

Fewer flowers and fruit

Decrease in foliage

FAQs About Fertilization

Visible signs that your trees or plants need fertilization may include small, pale leaves or stunted growth. In addition, newly transplanted trees may need supplemental fertilization due to poor soil or to help reduce shock from transplanting.

Applications are usually timed for late fall or early spring. It is important to remember that tree roots remain active until the soil drops below 40-degrees — this is typically several weeks after the leaves have fallen in the fall, and a few weeks before they appear in the spring. The professionals at Arbor Masters can diagnose the proper shrub or tree fertilization program for you.

The signs of over-fertilization include:

  • Yellowing leaves
  • Stunted growth
  • Wilting
  • Leaf burn

Fertilization provides the nutrients that trees need to produce chlorophyll and other pigments. Fertilizers can help trees and plants to tolerate drought by improving their water retention capacity.

“On-Time and Efficient.”

"My inquiry for a quote was responded to in minutes, and I had an in-person quote within an hour of my first contact. They crew that responded was on-time and efficient, and even went so far as to relocate some baby raccoons that were housed in our dead tree!!! No so much as a twig or leaf left behind!!! I'll recommend them every time!! THANK YOU!!"
