The Importance of Fertilization for Your Oklahoma City Trees
Soil provides trees with the nutrients they need to grow and stay healthy. Trees absorb nutrients from the soil, but most yards don’t naturally replenish them. Without macronutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as micronutrients like boron, zinc, and manganese, trees can’t grow properly and lose their vitality.
In urban areas, trees face more challenges. Unlike forests, where decomposing leaves and branches return nutrients to the soil, yards don’t benefit from this process. Many urban yards also contain subsoil instead of nutrient-rich topsoil, making it harder for trees to thrive.
Certified and Accredited Tree Care Professionals
There are two times when we recommend fertilization for most trees: fall and spring.
Fall: Wait until the end of October or early November before fertilization. We recommend using a slow-release fertilizer to deliver nutrients to the roots over time. Avoid using a high-nitrogen fertilizer in the fall, as it may spur tree growth that will be weak and likely die in the winter.
Spring: Fertilizing in the spring should happen right before trees begin to bloom. Spring fertilization gives your trees a boost in the growing season and helps them recover from any winter damage.

Fertilization Process
We’ve been working to streamline our approach since our founding in 1960, and here’s what to expect when you hire us:
Initial Assessment
We’ll examine your trees for signs of nutrient deficiencies and give you an appraisal of anything that might be wrong with them.
Soil Test
We’ll conduct a soil test to get an in-depth understanding of what sort of nutrient deficiencies your trees are facing.
Develop a Plan
We’ll develop a plan for the best way to deliver fertilizer to your trees and what kind of mixture to use for them.
Apply Fertilizer
We adjust our fertilizer application method depending on your tree’s needs, considering factors like space and soil structure.
Setting Up a Fertilizing Schedule
Fertilization often is a regular service for your soil, and we can set up a schedule that works best for you and your schedule.
Fertilization FAQs
Fertilization should be targeted toward correcting a nutrient deficiency in your soil rather than something you do at regular intervals. Always have a professional conduct a soil test before any fertilization.
Improving your soil’s structure by adding organic matter (such as compost) is a good way to replenish nutrients in the soil and provide long-term benefits.
The best fertilization method for a tree will depend on the specific tree. At Arbor Masters, we use foliar sprays and deep-root fertilization.
You will hopefully notice improvements in your leaves within a few weeks of application (if we apply during the growing season). However, the biggest benefits will come in the following year.
