Tree Pruning Permits and Ordinances in Oklahoma City

Generally speaking, you will not need a permit to prune private trees in Oklahoma City (though it never hurts to contact your local municipality to double-check). You’ll have to get a permit from the Enforcement Officer if you plan on pruning a tree on public property, according to the Oklahoma City municipal code.

Our team at Arbor Masters always follows all local ordinances and permitting requirements. We can help advise you if you need a permit for any tree work we do.

The Best Time for Oklahoma City Tree Pruning

Each season offers unique benefits for tree pruning, depending on your goals. Choose the right time based on what you want to achieve with your tree care.

  • Spring: Spring is a good time to prune spring-flowering ornamentals after they finish flowering.

  • Summer: With the tree fully leafed out, you’ll have a chance to see its entire structure and make decisions about how to shape the tree.

  • Fall: Fall is a time to avoid most pruning, except for removing dead or diseased branches.

  • Winter: Winter is the best time to do major pruning, as the trees are in a dormant state, and you don’t risk spreading diseases.

  • Put pets inside: Tree work has a habit of upsetting pets, so we ask that you keep them inside while we work to avoid potential injuries.

  • Ensure access: If you won’t be home, please ensure we have a way to get to the trees by leaving any gates unlocked before we get there.

  • Remove lawn furniture: Lawn furniture can be a tripping hazard or end up damaged if near tree pruning, so please move it away from the tree until we’re done.

FAQs About Tree Pruning

If you have the proper training and tools, pruning a small tree may be something you can do yourself. However, a large tree will likely require specialized equipment like bucket trucks. Pruning large trees is dangerous and difficult, so it’s best left to the professionals.

Proper pruning does not harm a tree. Using the wrong tools or improper practices can harm a tree and cause it stress.

There’s no hard and fast rule for how often to prune a tree, as every tree is different and has various needs. Generally speaking, trees can benefit from pruning every three to five years.

Tree topping is a now discredited practice where everything above an arbitrary line is cut off. This does not normally make your tree smaller, as it will put out extensive growth to try and recover from the injury. We will never top your trees and instead offer pruning for healthy trees.
