Stump Grinding for a Perfect Yard
Stump grinding is an add-on or standalone service that takes care of a stump after tree removal. When a tree care professional removes a tree, they will leave a stump standing that can be ground down below the soil level.
At Arbor Masters, we can send our stump grinding team to take care of your stump after tree removal. Or, if you have a stump standing after a previous tree removal, we can come out and grind it down for you.
Why You Need Stump Grinding
Stump grinding has several benefits for your property, and it is worth considering after you have a tree removed. Some of the common benefits we hear our customers cite when they have the Arbor Masters team perform stump grinding include:
Eliminate Tripping Hazards
Stumps, especially any roots that have surfaced from them, can become a tripping hazard if left standing. Don’t put others at risk; take care of the stump.
Better Curb Appeal
A stump, especially one that is rotting, can lower your property’s curb appeal and decrease property value.
More Space for Landscaping Projects
With the stump out of your way, you’ll have more room to use for landscaping or beautifying projects. You could plant flowers or put down lawn decorations where the stump stood.
Avoid Regrowth
Sprouts and suckers can spring up from a stump. This regrowth is often quite ugly and will need to be removed.
Our Stump Grinding Process
We have a standardized stump grinding process that we follow each time we come to work on your property. It looks like this:
Assessment
We’ll examine your stump, get an idea of its size and location, and provide you with an electronic quote.
Book Appointment
After you accept the quote, we’ll schedule you and set up on the specified day to efficiently grind the stump.
Grind the Stump
We’ll quickly grind the stump to at least six inches below the soil level so it won’t be visible above ground.
Clean Up
With the stump ground, we’ll turn to cleanup. We will backfill the hole and dispose of the grindings or leave them for you.
Inspection
We’ll perform a final inspection of the area to ensure your yard looks perfect and there’s nothing out of place or damaged.

What to Do with Stump Grindings
You may either ask us to leave the stump grindings or haul them away after we’re done. Most stumps will produce more grindings than you may think, and you’ll find yourself with a pile of grindings and no idea what to do with them. There are two primary fates for stump grindings:
- Mulch: Stump grindings make an excellent natural mulch for your garden or trees. This mulch will naturally decompose over time, putting nutrients into the soil and improving its structure.
- Compost: Stump grindings can work as compost as well. Place them with your regular compost and allow them to decompose before adding them to your garden or yard.
Stump Grinding FAQs
We have a dedicated stump grinding team who will come to your property after we remove the tree to take care of the stump. We try to schedule you for stump grinding as soon as possible after your removal.
While there’s no real reason you can’t leave a stump standing, it will be an eyesore and a tripping hazard when someone visits. It is better to remove it than leave a rotting stump standing.
While there may be some minor cosmetic damage after we finish stump grinding, our team will do their best to avoid any potential damage to your yard.
Stump removal is a very invasive process that requires a team to dig out the entire stump. We prefer stump grinding, as it causes less damage and still gets the stump out of sight.
