Understanding the Power of Tree Inventories

We all want to make informed decisions using data, but many of us don’t extend this to our trees. A tree inventory can give you the data you need to make intelligent choices regarding tree care as well as other benefits, such as:

Catching any safety concerns early

Discovering signs of insects or diseases

More accurate bidding when seeking them for projects

Determining if you can support more trees

Making a budget for tree care

Choosing the Right Inventory

The three distinct types of inventories are useful for different organizations and purposes. Some instances where you may want a certain type of inventory include:

  • Sample Inventory: Sample inventories are often the most cost-effective of the three, as they allow you to have a good idea of the trees on your property without plunging into a full inventory.

  • Full Inventory: A full inventory is an excellent investment for a company or person who purchased a new piece of land and wants to know every aspect of its trees. You’ll have complete information and can make the most informed decisions possible.

  • Partial Inventory: We may recommend a partial inventory if you have a large property and are concerned about a specific problem (such as recent sightings of emerald ash borer on a property with several ash trees).

Who Can Benefit from a Tree Inventory

While some may not appreciate the power of a tree inventory, they have far-reaching benefits for many individuals and entities. Tree inventories can have practical benefits for:

  • HOA Boards: A tree inventory can examine all trees in the community and ensure they are healthy.

  • Large Retail Areas: A tree inventory can check for signs of stress in your trees that deal with heat that is radiated from parking lots and roads.

  • Municipalities: Small municipalities can learn about their street trees and check their condition with a tree inventory.

  • Apartment Complex Owners: The trees in the common ground of an apartment complex need regular maintenance to remain healthy.

  • Colleges and Schools: Trees help create aesthetic appeal on campuses, and a tree inventory can check for signs of stress with them.

Tree Inventory FAQs

While there’s no hard-and-fast rule, we recommend having a professional conduct a tree inventory at least once every 10 years to update your data.

Yes, we can perform tree inventories at any time of the year, including winter, when a tree doesn’t have leaves. Our arborists can examine the bark and growth patterns of a tree to determine its species.

We typically record information on a tree’s condition, size, species, and age. We’ll input that data on our ArborPro software to keep the data properly organized and easy to read.

The data you receive from a tree inventory can help you make informed decisions about future tree care. You can also use it to help assess your property value or better understand the scope of the job when you put tree work out to bid on.
