The Importance of Tree Pruning in Shawnee
Tree pruning is more than just a haircut for your trees. Trimming your trees should be a regular part of tree care, as it has numerous benefits. Some of the primary benefits to you and trees include:
Reduce Danger During Storms: Removing weak or overly long branches will increase safety during a storm and lower the risk of a broken branch causing property or personal damage. Pruning can also make a tree more aerodynamic and less prone to failure.
Better Curb Appeal: A well-pruned and maintained tree is always going to look better than an unruly one. Regular pruning helps keep your tree looking its best with a more defined shape rather than growing in every direction.
Better Airflow and Light Penetration: By allowing more light and air to reach the lower section of the tree, you’ll reduce the risk of mold or fungus developing. It will also improve the quality of the fruit your tree produces.
Healthier Growth: Pruning a tree when it is young can train it to grow in a specific way. Pruning a young tree gives it better structure and can remove competing branches that fight with each other for sunlight.

The Danger of DIY Pruning in Shawnee
In our 60+ years of experience, we've heard countless tales of homeowners attempting DIY tree trimming. While you may be able to prune a smaller tree if you know what you’re doing, larger trees always require help from a professional. Some of the dangers of DIY pruning include:
Risk of Falling: To reach high branches, homeowners often turn to a standard step ladder. Professionals use orchard ladders that provide a better base and are much safer for use in a yard. A standard ladder is too unstable to use for pruning and incredibly dangerous.
Risk of Harming the Tree: Pruning cuts must be precise and done with the right tools that have been appropriately maintained. Making cuts in the wrong place can stress a tree and open it up for attacks from insects and diseases.
Risk from Dropping Branches: A branch may not look so heavy when it is suspended above you, but it will have enough weight to cause a major injury if it makes contact with you on the way down.
The Best Time to Prune Your Trees in Shawnee
Our Arbor Masters team offers tree pruning year-round, though some forms of pruning are better in different seasons than others. Generally speaking, these should be the primary goals of pruning in each season:
Spring: Spring pruning is perfect for spring-flowering ornamentals right after they finish blooming to encourage better flowering next season.
Summer: We perform pruning to shape trees in the summer, as it is easier to see what your tree looks like fully leafed out.
Fall: Fall is a perfect time to remove dead or diseased branches from your tree to help prepare it for winter.
Winter: We prefer to do major pruning of your tree during the winter when it is dormant. Winter pruning also limits the risk of spreading diseases.

Tree Pruning FAQs
In general, mature trees can benefit from pruning every 3-5 years, while newly planted trees will benefit from pruning every 2-3 years. During our initial assessment, we can inform you if your tree needs a trim.
Pruning, when done correctly, will not cause much stress to your tree and will have various benefits. Improper pruning can cause long-term harm to a tree.
Tree topping is a discredited practice where someone would pick a horizontal line and cut everything above it on a tree. While it may seem like it could make your tree shorter, it will actually do the opposite, as the tree will send up rapid growth to try and recover from the damage. The Arbor Masters team will never suggest or perform tree topping.
Generally speaking, you do not need to apply paint or a wound dressing to your trees after pruning. If you prune an oak tree in the summer, however, many arborists recommend a wound dressing to prevent the spread of oak wilt, a deadly fungal disease with no cure.
