Arbor Masters’ Approach to Tree Preservation
Since our founding more than 60 years ago, we’ve been honing and developing our processes to make tree preservation as simple for you and effective for your trees as possible.
Initial Consultation
One of our ISA Certified Arborists will inspect your trees and determine what is ailing them. They may find your tree is developing girdling roots, the soil is compacted, or the root flare (the part of the tree where the trunk meets the ground) is covered.
Develop a Plan
Once they know what they’re up against, our arborists will determine the best plan to help preserve your tree. We’ll send you an estimate and schedule your service once you’ve accepted the estimate.
Execute the Plan
We will do the agreed-upon work. Our tree preservation services focus on aerating the soil with an air spade or uncovering the tree’s root flare. If you need help with protecting your roots during construction, we’ll work with the construction company.
When Your Tree Needs Expert Help
There are several signs your tree may show that it needs help from the team at Arbor Masters. Some of the signs a tree may benefit from preservation services include:
Visible Signs of Poor Health: Discolored leaves and dead patches on the canopy are often signs of a problem that demands attention.
Root Damage or Exposure: If you notice visible roots or they appear damaged, it’s a danger to your tree’s health.
Recent or Upcoming Construction: Construction can heavily compact soil and cut roots, harming a tree.
Structural Problems: A tree shouldn’t lean or have visible cracks in its trunk.
The Dangers of Compacted Soil
Soil naturally has pores where air, water, and tree roots can enter. When soil becomes compacted through heavy rain, foot traffic, or vehicles, it will reduce this pore space and reduce the soil’s ability to take in additional water.
Compacted soil limits a tree’s ability to expand its roots. This can lead to girdling roots, where the tree’s roots begin to circle around the trunk, prohibiting it from transporting nutrients from the upper portion to the lower portion, and vice versa.
Why Save a Tree Rather Than Remove It
Tree removal is a service you should use only after you’ve given plenty of thought to the alternatives. Some of the reasons to try and save a tree first before removing it include:
Trees Benefit You: Trees beautify your yard, increase property value, and decrease cooling costs in the summer.
Trees Take a Long Time to Grow: Removing a tree and planting a new one will take many years to provide the benefits you currently get from a tree.
Trees Benefit Our Community: Trees are good for the environment, and by maintaining trees, we can reduce the temperature in urban areas.
Tree Preservation FAQs
An air spade shoots compressed air to dislodge soil, reducing compaction without cutting the roots.
Through precise root pruning, it may be possible to save a tree from girdling roots. However, in some cases, there is no way to save the tree, and removal is the only option.
Root pruning is best left to an expert, as the roots you are pruning are still responsible for taking up nutrients from the soil. Cutting them with no experience puts the tree’s life at risk.
Construction vehicles can quickly compact soil, and digging may sever roots when it's done within the drip line of a tree.
