Best Times to Have Your Trees Pruned

Timing is Critical for Healthy Trees

While tree pruning can be done year-round, there are certain times that are more ideal. In the winter, when trees are dormant, pruning can minimize stress on the tree and reduce the risk of spreading diseases like oak wilt or Dutch elm disease. During the growing season, pruning allows for a better assessment of the tree's shape and identification of dead or dying areas.

However, removing dead or diseased branches can be done at any time of year to prevent further damage and maintain the tree's health. Ultimately, the best time for pruning depends on the specific needs of your trees and the goals you are trying to achieve.

Our Tree Pruning Process

Since founding Arbor Masters in 1960, we’ve constantly been developing our methods and processes to make things as smooth as possible for our customers and their trees. Our process for tree pruning looks like this:

  • 1

    Initial Consultation

We provide free estimates to take a look at your trees and give you an idea of the kind of work that you’ll need. We’ll examine the condition and size of the tree and get an idea of any complicating factors.

  • 2

    Electronic Quote

We’ll create an on-site quote and send it to you via email for approval. If you agree, then we’ll finalize the plan and schedule you for tree pruning at a convenient time.

  • 3

    Obtain Permits

Some municipalities may require a permit for tree pruning. We’ll assist you through the permit process or work to get approval from your HOA for pruning.

  • 4

    Professional Care

Whether you need ornamental trees pruned for beauty, evergreens for health, or shade trees to reduce their size, we can prune them. Our ISA Certified Arborists follow all the proper guidelines for pruning trees without harming them.

  • 5

    Thorough Clean Up

We’ll clean up any debris and feed it into our chipper. We can leave the woodchips for you as mulch or haul them away. We’ll give you a chance to take a look at your tree and ensure you’re happy with how it looks.

Benefits of Tree Pruning

There are numerous benefits to pruning your trees, including:

  • Controlling Growth: Pruning can help shape a tree to a more manageable size that will fit better with your yard.

  • Maintaining Health: Removing dead or diseased branches will reduce stress and limit the potential for opportunistic insects to attack your tree.

  • Promoting Flowering and Fruit: Strategic pruning can enhance flowering in ornamental trees and increase fruit production by allowing more sunlight to reach the branches.

  • Making a Tree Safer: Removing dead branches will limit the danger of broken branches in a storm.

Tree Pruning Permits in Fort Worth

Fort Worth ordinances require anyone planning to prune a tree on public property (for instance, the right-of-way) to apply for a permit before pruning.

Get Ready! Preparing for Tree Pruning

On the day of the pruning, we’ll take care of the difficult part, but we could use your help with a few things before we start the process.

  • Clean Up Around the Tree

If there are any lawn decorations or furniture near the tree, move them away while we work to avoid any damage and lower the risk of tripping for our team.

  • Keep Your Pets Indoors

If you have any pets, keep them inside so we don’t have to worry about them accidentally getting in the way of pruning.

  • Leave Any Gates Unlocked

If you have a gate to your yard, please leave it unlocked on the day we come to prune so we can easily access the tree.

Tree Pruning FAQs

Topping your trees is incredibly stressful for them and may even kill them outright. Topping also doesn’t accomplish one’s goal of making a tree smaller, as it will shoot out new, weak growth in response to the trauma.

Every tree is unique, but, in general, most arborists will recommend pruning mature trees every three to five years. For young trees, consider having a professional prune them every two or three years.

When done correctly by an ISA Certified Arborist, pruning won’t harm a tree (in fact, forest trees occasionally self-prune to remove branches). Improper pruning cuts can damage or even kill a tree.

Pruning trees is dangerous, and there are too many sad stories of homeowners trying to prune their own mature trees and ending up seriously injured from a falling branch or falling from a ladder. Pruning without the proper training and techniques is dangerous: don’t do it.
