The Value of Fertilization for Your Tulsa Trees
When trees grow in a forest, they have the luxury of growing in soil that is constantly seeing its supply of nutrients replenished by decomposing organic matter. Yard trees do not have this same access to nutrient-rich soil, as the soil in your yard does not have the ability to replenish nutrients as efficiently. To make matters worse, the soil in your yard may be subsoil and not topsoil.
In short, trees will deplete the nutrients in your soil to grow and remain vigorous. Fertilization adds supplemental nutrients into the soil and allow a tree to continue growing. Fertilization is best used in conjunction with a soil building program that adds organic matter to the soil to increase its overall health and nutrient density.

Best Time of the Year to Fertilize Your Tulsa Trees
Fertilization is best done at two distinct times of the year: spring and fall.
Time spring fertilization for right before the trees bloom. The goal of spring fertilization is to give the trees a jump start to the growing season. It will also help a tree recover from any winter damage it may have suffered.
Fall fertilization is aimed at using a slow-release fertilizer to give a tree nutrients throughout the dormant period and leave it ready to grow in the spring with healthy roots. Do not use a high-nitrogen fertilizer in the fall, as nitrogen will encourage rapid growth that will likely die in the cold winter temperatures. We recommend timing fall fertilization to the end of October or in early November. Just ensure you have it done before the ground freezes.

Fertilization FAQs
We recommend avoiding high-nitrogen fertilizers in most cases, especially when fertilizing in the fall. Nitrogen is the primary nutrient plants use to grow, and giving them too much will encourage excess growth the plant can’t support, which will die in the winter.
For most purposes, fertilizing in the late summer and early fall is generally not recommended, as is the case in the winter. Additionally, never fertilize a tree dealing with drought stress, as the trees need water to make use of fertilizer. Our arborists can help you create a fertilization schedule that works best for your trees.
Soil tests are a crucial part of fertilization, as they inform of any nutrient deficiencies in the soil and how best to counteract these problems.
We can help you set up a fertilization schedule, but truthfully, the best schedule for fertilizing your trees is to do it when they need supplemental nutrients.
